SWOT Analysis

Choosing the right career and identifying the steps to reach a career goal are undeniably related with one's self-awareness of their interpersonal and professional skills. In order to obtain a better perspective of what the best approach for me is to get my desired career path I completed a SWOT Analysis the outcomes of which gave me a better sense of direction about how to successfully achieve my career ambitions.

The SWOT analysis has a simple structure of 4 elements - Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. The following observations are based on my current work ethic and circumstances which means that some of they may be altered overtime hence the completion of a new SWOT analysis might be needed after a period of a few months.

1. Strengths
  • Good skills with front-end programming languages (HTML, CSS) and some knowledge on back-end languages (Javascript, jQuery, XML)
  • Experienced in using some of Adobe Creative Cloud's main tools (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Muse)
  • Ability to develop digital content from home (websites, visuals)
  • Motivation to learn new software and developing techniques
  • Genuine interest for web design and development
  • Understanding, willing to help, team player
2. Weaknesses
  • Not very good with reflective writing and reports
  • Lacks organisational skills and not suitable for managing duties
  • Hard to focus at times
  • Communication skills need improving in terms of confidence and self esteem
  • Sometimes find it hard to stand up for myself and defend my opinion
3. Opportunities
  • Looking into additional software related learning courses and certification may increase chances for employability
  • Learning new programming languages as part of my course
  • Graduate jobs in the field of web design rely mainly on skills and experience -> assignment results may not be crucial for the success of my application
4. Threats
  • Not a lot of web design jobs available in the area
  • Job adverts mainly listing experience as a crucial requirement
  • Unsuccessful job applications can lead to disappointment and lack of motivation

Skills Gap & Job Analysis

Another step that I took which helped me visualise the steps I need to take in order to get a job in the field I have chosen was to look into current web design vacancies. Understanding what skills employers seek from candidates would help me analyse my understanding of how prepared I am at the moment to get a job in web design and what I need to do to increase the chances of getting employed. For the purpose I spent some time researching web design job specifications and came across a wide range of skills that are primarily required for the job. Here is a list of the vacancies which the content below is based on: Creative Web Designer - Atlantic Group (advertised by Indeed)  - optional screenshot Graphic Designer / Web Designer - Hays Specialist (advertised by Reed)  - optional screenshot Junior Web Designer - Become (Advertised by The Guardian Jobs)  - optional screenshot Web Designer - Dixons Carphone (advertised by TotalJobs)  - optional sc...

Choosing a career path

A career path I am passionate to pursue is the one of a web designer. It requires good understanding and following of current trends in web design technologies. Considering the interpersonal skills that employers demand, creativity, eye for detail and good communication skills are a necessity for becoming a competitive web designer. The main responsibility of this job from a technical aspect is to construct web pages for various businesses ranging from smaller companies that need to be advertised online to big corporations that seek professionals to manage all their online content via platforms like Wordpress and Joomla (“Web Designer Job Profile”, n.d). Unlike the position of a web developer who is managing the back-end of a website (programming languages, user interface, Search Engine optimization), a web designer is in charge of the visual presentation of the website (“Web Design Vs. Web Development: What’s the Difference?”, 2014) . This includes arranging the layout, colour...

The importance of a (live) Portfolio

During my first visit at Bate Brand’s studio I encountered a situation that made me feel quite nervous initially. After summarizing the idea of doing work experience, I was asked by Mr. Bate to show the team a representation of my work. I assumed that Mr. Bate wanted to see a live portfolio with excerpts that I have created – a necessity for any designer that works with web technologies and graphics. For the time being I did not have a portfolio that was available online. I had researched hosting options but did not go any further than that. This made me feel quite insecure and I felt almost ashamed that I had not proceeded with the task before.  I explained to Mr. Bate that at the present time I was not able to showcase my previous work in a remotely accessed format. I also mentioned that I had looked into domain availability and pricing plans and explained that at the time I could not afford them. However, I remembered that when approaching Bate Brand for a first time by an ...
